Shri Atul Kothari ji speaks at the inaugural session
It has been a pleasure to be at the National Workshop of Shiksha Sanskriti Uthan Nyas at Gwalior for the last two days. It is exciting to see over 40 participants gathered from all across India to learn new concepts from senior members and teachers of the organization.

Each participant was required to have working knowledge of over five vedic maths sutras. Before the start of the workshop a self assessment test was given to all participants. Let me share a question with you.
Shri Seeta Rama Rao ji takes session on Day 1

Shri Kailash Vishwakarma ji discusses VM with participants
Can you show 10 ways to find the Square of 995 ? I must add and confess that I could show only about 6 ways to do it. Thereafter I learnt the other 4 ways to do it. Also I must bring to  attention that when we started discussing we came up with more than 16 ways to solve the sum!

Thereafter Shri Seeta Rama Rao ji took center stage and took a session on exponents which he explained in detail. A lot of technical details were shared and explanations about Meruprasta( Pascal's triangles) were given.
Shri Bachubhai Rawal ji speaks on Roots & exponents

Shri Atul Kothari ji chairs the introductory session
Post lunch session was given by Shri Bachubhai Rawal, an exponent of Vedic Mathematics. He beautifully showed the connections between roots and exponents.

Then came the reports which were given by various representative and state heads. This session was jointly chaired by Shri Atul Kothari ji, Dr.Kailash Vishwakarma ji and Shri Bachubhai Rawalji. The various reports were very much appreciated by all the participants who encouraged each other.

Thereafter the day came to an end with a short excursion to the famous Sun Temple nearby. We now eagerly await the start of Day 2 where we will be learning Division and Divisibility by Shri Vishwanath Unkalkarji author of Magical World of Vedic Mathematics and Excel with Vedic Mathematics.

Shri V.G.Unkalkar explaining the Crowning Gem Sutra 'Dhwajanka'
Shri Sriram Chauthaiwale on Partial Fractions
Day 2 of the conference opened with overcast skies in Gwalior. Highlight of Day 2 were the lovely Idlis which everyone relished and enjoyed.

After which the session was on Dhwajanka  the Crowning Gem Sutra for Division. All aspects were covered for this method including altered remainders and three or more digit divisors.

Shri Sriram Chauthaiwale spoke and explained Partial Fractions very lucidly.Like all lectures this one too was of a very high standard.

Discussions then happened on the way forward for the organization under the leadership of Shri Atul Kothari ji and Dr.Kailash Vishwakarmaji. Everyone contributed ideas and strategies to take the organization's mission, values and vision forward.

The Gwalior Fort
I must confess to my dear readers that one of the advantages of traveling extensively is to be able to see the beauty of our country's ancient heritage. Take for example the 8th-century Gwalior Fort located in the heart of the Indian town of Gwalior.

The fort consists of a defensive structure and two main palaces, Gurjari Mahal and Man Mandir, built by Man Singh Tomar. What it also consists is the oldest inscription of the 'Zero' - One of India's greatest contribution in the field of Mathematics.

The inscription is located inside the Chaturbhuj Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, which I had the opportunity to see! The fort itself is more than grand and its worth the effort to travel to Gwalior to see it.

Meet Neshni Naidoo, Director Vedic Maths Forum South Africa :From Chemical Engineering to Maths Champion.

Mrs.Neshni Naidoo
Mrs.Neshni Naidoo, a chemical engineering graduate and the Director of the South African Vedic Maths Forum, illustrates how numbers and compassion can go hand in hand.

Careers, Choices and Complications

30 years ago I would never have imagined that I would be where I am today! Back then, career choices were simple – doctor, lawyer or accountant. These were safe career choices if you were one of the ‘brighter’ students and were guaranteed to see you financially secure.

Although I enjoyed all the subjects I studied at school, the sciences fascinated me because I wanted to know how and why things work. I eventually ended up studying Chemical Engineering at the University of KwaZulu Natal in Durban.

It was an unusual career choice in a male dominated environment, but a challenging one that enabled you to create new processes, designs, equipment etc. using your knowledge of Science and Maths.

Work Experience, Problem Solving and Project Management skills

Over the next 8 years, I was fortunate to work at a number of companies, Sasol (Sasolburg), NCP (Johannesburg), CPUT (Cape Town) and SANS Fibres (Cape Town).

The work I did during this time included the following:

    Research and Development
    Plant Support
    Conceptual Design
    Troubleshooting
    Project Management and
    Educational Material Development.

Although the type of work was different, there was a common thread that ran through each of them – each was project based and involved finding solutions to problems, documenting and sharing them.

With each project, I developed new skills, gained knowledge of different processes and was continually challenged.

Meaning, Maths and Priorities

I had always assumed that I would be a career person, but with the arrival of my children, my priorities changed.

I felt that it was more important for me to be at home with them in their first few years. During this time at home, I realised  my passion lay in Education.

However, I did not want to teach in a traditional schooling environment or use traditional techniques but rather take my love of learning and translate this into creative teaching that would inspire and motivate students rather than turn them away.

In 2010, I bought a franchise with EXPERI-BUDDIES ™ where I taught Science as a fun Extra-mural class to children between the ages of 6 and 9. During interactions with parents and teachers and from my own experience with my son, I became aware of the problems associated with Maths and Science Education in our country.

In an attempt to help my own child by finding more creative ways of teaching him Maths, I came across Vedic Maths. This is a system of Mental Maths that originated in India in the early 1900’s and was developed by the Mathematician and Scholar, Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji.

Becoming a Vedic Maths Champion

Upon completing a Vedic Maths Training Course through Vedic Maths Forum India, I was offered the opportunity to promote this in South Africa.

In October 2013, the Vedic Maths Forum South Africa was established with the purpose of supporting and developing Maths Education in South Africa through Online Tutoring in Regular School Maths and Vedic Maths and workshops for teachers, parents and learners.

When I realised that this is where I was meant to be, I knew I had reached a turning point .

Through our work with learners – we are able to inspire a love for Maths. However, this needs to be supported by teachers and parents. This is why the workshops with them are an essential part of the equation – reducing their Maths anxiety is crucial to reducing Maths anxiety in the learner.

What I love about the work I do, is that I am constantly creating – more creative ways of helping learners understand Maths and content to support teachers and parents and inspire a love of Maths.

Reducing parents Maths anxiety is crucial to reducing Maths anxiety in the learner.

You Have Career Choices if You Are A Lifelong Learner

For some people, the career choice is simple – they may have known at a young age.

For me, it was a journey of discovery – a 30-year journey.

I firmly believe that the experiences I have had were all designed to help me get where I am today and that they have made me who I am today.

I also believe that as we grow and as our priorities change, our career choices should also evolve. It is important therefore to be a lifelong learner for a skill you develop now, may become relevant at a later stage in life.

'Maths Sutra - The Art of Vedic Speed Calculation' by Gaurav Tekriwal

It gives me great honor and pride to present to you 'Maths Sutra - The Art of Vedic Speed Calculation' published by Penguin Random House India. Based on the sixteen sutras, vedic maths is practically the only magical principle you need to tackle anything from simple arithmetic to algebra, algorithms, square roots, cube roots and many more mathematical concepts.

I would like to urge all of you to go ahead and visit our new book microsite www.mathssutra.com
Please feel free to purchase Maths Sutra from Amazon.in or Flipkart.com

In this book I have tried to make concepts simple yet very relevant , given students loads of practice exercises and made it fun too! This book is also the result of my travels and workshops conducted at various cities and towns globally.

The rationale for this book stems from the current numeracy standards of India and a desire to help students who struggle with numbers. There can be many ways of looking at a problem and students can have a different perspectives too. This book is a matter of giving the student a choice in terms of the methods they use in the classroom.

Also I often hear in my workshops that why the need for Vedic Maths in this age of computers and calculators? Well computers and calculators is certainly not a replacement of the maths classes and mental maths skills is needed to develop number sense in kids. That's why the need for mental maths programs like Vedic Mathematics.

Well I urge the community at large to take advantage of this book and use it for their various competitive examinations. If any part of this book ever helps anyone to solve a maths problem in an easier way - I would consider my role as a teacher and author fulfilled. From the New Indian Express: It’s Mathe-Magic, Really !

Vedic Maths originated in India, but it disturbs me immensely, when people don’t acknowledge its value and have to be convinced about it, starts off Gaurav Tekriwal, author of Maths Sutra, a compilation of major Mathematical formulae from the Vedic era.

The President of the Vedic Maths Forum and a passionate mathematician, who has taken to it as his profession for the last 15-years, Gaurav, says his book is an “attempt to do away with the Maths phobia experienced by students and make it a fun learning exercise.”

But he does not intend to stop at this. Other than making Maths easy for the students, he believes now is the time to bring major changes in the country’s education system under the genre of numeric studies. “Researches have shown that as many as 75 per cent of the students of Grade V cannot solve a division problem. That is a huge number. To deal with it, a reform is needed. That's why I wrote the book!” says the Kolkata-based educator.
